From Stadtlohn to the whole world

HÜLSTA-HISTORY

The hülsta Company history

More than 75 years ago Alois Hüls opened a carpenter’s shop with 10 employees in the Westphalian town of Stadtlohn and in doing so laid the foundations of our company. The brand name hülsta originates from the family name of the founder (Hüls) and the name of the town (Stadtlohn). His son, Karl Hüls, took over the company in 1960 and developed it into the most famous German furniture brand manufacturer.

Through its product developments, hülsta played an early and lasting role in shaping the furnishing sector of German industry. More than 220 national and international patents have been registered in the name of hülsta. Some of the milestones in product development have been the extendable high bedroom wardrobe INTERMAT in 1962 and the beginning of slatted base production in 1965. In 1968 the ALLWAND bedroom range was introduced, the first column-type range with unrestricted front arrangements based on the endless assembly principle, as well as the UNIVERSA living room range, which was the origin of the assembly unit principle – a planning principle which still forms the basis of furniture planning decades later.

With its versatile collections, hülsta covers almost every segment of the furnishing sector: the Babies/Children/Youths sector since 1979 (first Baby’s range: BONNY), the Home Office sector since 1986 and, with its now! by hülsta range, the first brand furniture cash-and-carry range came onto the market in 1994. With its Dining segment, hülsta has provided high-grade dining room tables and chairs since 2002 which have quickly found their enthusiasts as a result of their numerous innovations.

Quality security and consumer protection are right at the top of hülsta’s list of values. The German Furniture Quality Association (DGM), which we have been a member of since 1974, applies strict standards when examining products. All of our box units and base frames have displayed the “Blue Angel for low emissions” seal since 1966, a label based on criteria which are just as strict and which is awarded to products which are low on emissions and particularly environmentally friendly. When purchasing new hülsta or now! by hülsta furniture, you get a five year guarantee on the immaculate condition of our products after registering.

In manufacturing our furniture we place the greatest importance on sparing use of resources, longevity and a good microclimate in the home. That is why we ensure that our wood comes from controlled sustainable forestry regions so we do not use any tropical wood. This not only saves the rainforests but also shortens transport distances and therefore reduces the emission of greenhouse gases. The use of environmentally friendly lacquers and glues for a healthy climate both outside and inside your home is, of course, another key feature of sustainable furniture production.
